How we chose

Small homes and condos need a unit that fits a closet or laundry wall, keeps its noise down, and can live without an exhaust run outside if the building does not allow one. We ranked on footprint first, then on published air watts and water lift, filtration, warranty terms and inlet compatibility. All four fit standard 2-inch pipe. The two OVO units support low-voltage and direct-connect electric inlets; InterVac and Smart Vac list low-voltage only.

Where a figure comes only from an Amazon listing we say so. That is the main reason the Smart Vac ranks last.

1. OVO 630ST-18B: best overall

The 18B gives up nothing on suction to fit a small space. OVO publishes 630 air watts and 122 in of water lift from a 5.7 in thru-flow motor with soft start, the same figures as the larger 630ST-25H, at 60 dB. The canister is a top-load 18 L (4.75 gal) that stands 19.49 in tall and 11.42 in wide, with a mandatory rinse-only protective filter and a 12.5 L disposable bag. It is rated for 5,000 sq ft and up to 5 inlets, which covers almost any condo or small house. Warranty is 10 years on parts and 1 year labor, with an optional paid 25-year extension; the protective filter must be replaced every 2 years to keep it.

It is bag-only, so there is no bagless option, and OVO recommends venting outside.

Skip it if you cannot run an exhaust outside and want a unit designed to exhaust indoors.

2. InterVac IVD660H CondoVac: best for condos

InterVac built this unit for exactly the condo problem. It is 7.625 in deep (3.875 in when flush-mounted using the optional K-385 frame on the IVD660F version), weighs 14 lb per the product page (11 lb per the manual), and publishes 660 air watts, 134 in sealed water lift and 121 CFM. An exhaust filter is standard, so the unit can exhaust into the room, and an optional K-365 cover lets you vent outside later. It uses a 2 gal HEPA-type 5-layer Y20 bag and is rated for 3,000 sq ft. The warranty is 2 years on the unit and 30 days on accessories, and InterVac’s policy explicitly covers purchases from authorized retailers including Amazon.

Trade-offs: 70 dB is the loudest here, the 2 gal bag fills fast, and InterVac’s product page and manual disagree on amps (15.2 versus 12.5 A). Low-voltage inlets only.

Skip it if your home is over 3,000 sq ft, or you want a long warranty.

3. OVO 630ST-25H: best hybrid

If you have the height for a 25.39 in canister, the 630ST-25H adds the option to run bagless. Same 630 air watts, 122 in water lift, 60 dB and 5,000 sq ft, 5-inlet rating as the 18B, but with a 4.2 in single-stage motor, a 25 L bottom-load canister and a washable FP-8 permanent filter that must be replaced every 2 years for the warranty. The 10-year parts, 1-year labor warranty matches the 18B. OVO also sells it in a kit with a carpet attachment set.

Skip it if space is tight; the 18B is 6 in shorter with the same suction.

4. Smart Vac SMP400: budget hybrid

The SMP400 is a 550 air watt hybrid with a 15 L (4 gal) bin, a self-cleaning filter and a soft-start motor, drawing 13.4 A. Coverage is stated three ways across listings (3,000, 4,000 and 5,000 sq ft); we use the 3,000 figure. Smart Vac is a Nuera Air brand now built by Trovac Industries, the same manufacturer behind Prolux and Beam.

Every figure comes from the Amazon listing, which is sold by a third-party seller. No water lift, noise, dimensions or weight are published, one retailer lists the unit as unavailable, and we found no warranty terms for this model. Trovac’s Smart warranty covers units it manufactured from September 2024; an older Nuera-era SMP400 would not be covered by it. The listing also says the unit turns on as soon as it is plugged in.

Skip it if you want a warranty you can read before buying. For most people, the OVO 630ST-18B is the safer budget choice.

What to check before you buy

  • Where it will hang. Measure the wall space and the clearance to the ceiling for bag changes. The 18B is top-load; the 25H is bottom-load.
  • Exhaust. Can you get a 2-inch pipe outside? If not, the InterVac is the only unit here designed to exhaust indoors. Read the exhaust and muffler guide.
  • Inlet type. The OVO units accept low-voltage and direct-connect electric inlets; InterVac and Smart Vac list low-voltage only. See identify your inlet type.
  • Building rules. Condo boards often restrict wall penetrations. Ask before you buy a unit that needs venting.
  • Noise. 60 dB for the OVOs against 70 dB for the InterVac. In a closet near living space, that difference is audible.
  • What is in the box. No hose or tools. Add a 30 or 35 ft hose or a kit.

What to do next

Check the system sizer for your floor area and longest run, read retrofit an existing home if the walls are finished, and pick a hose and floor tool. For a condo with mostly hard floors, a low-voltage kit with a combination floor tool is usually enough; for carpet, see our powerheads roundup.

Frequently asked questions

Can you put a central vacuum in a condo?

Yes, if you have a closet, utility room or laundry wall to mount the unit and a way to run 2-inch pipe to one or two inlets. The InterVac CondoVac is designed for this: it is 7.6 in deep, has an exhaust filter so outside venting is optional, and an in-wall flush-mount version exists.

Do small units have less suction?

Not necessarily. The OVO 630ST-18B and the InterVac both publish 630 to 660 air watts, in the same range as many full-size units. What you give up is bag capacity (2 to 4.75 gal here) and the number of inlets the unit is rated to serve.

Does a compact central vacuum need to vent outside?

OVO recommends venting the 630 units outside. InterVac fits an exhaust filter as standard, so the CondoVac can exhaust indoors, and an optional K-365 cover lets you vent out if you can. Venting outside is always quieter and cleaner when it is possible.

How many inlets do I need in a small home?

Usually one or two with a 30 or 35 ft hose. OVO rates both 630 units for 5 inlets. The InterVac is rated for 3,000 sq ft, which in practice means one or two inlets. Our planning inlet locations guide shows how to place them.

Is the Smart Vac SMP400 still made?

We are not sure. Smart Vac units are now built by Trovac Industries, which states that its warranty covers Smart units manufactured from September 2024. The SMP400 listing comes from a third-party Amazon seller and a retailer marked it unavailable, and we found no warranty terms for this specific unit.
