Pipe, fittings, wire and mounting

Central vacuum pipe is 2-inch outside diameter thin-wall PVC, not Schedule 40 plumbing pipe. The fittings, the direction they face, and the wire that runs with them decide whether a system clogs or flows.

2-inch central vacuum PVC pipe (thin-wall vacuum tubing)

What It Is

Rigid, thin-wall PVC tubing made specifically for central vacuum systems. Nominal 2 inch OUTSIDE diameter (about 1/16 in wall, so ID is roughly 1-7/8 in). Made to ASTM F2158 (Standard Specification for Residential Central-Vacuum Tube and Fittings). Sold in white (and sometimes black ABS) in 4 ft / 47 in ('4 ft 11 in' in Canada), 8 ft and 10 ft sticks.

What It Does

Forms the in-wall trunk and branch lines that carry dirt-laden air from each inlet valve to the power unit. Also used for the exhaust line to an outside vent.

Standard Specs

Outside Diameter
2.0 in (Hide-A-Hose: '2 in OD and 1/16 in thick, not Schedule 40'; MD: '2 in OD thin-wall PVC, ASTM F 2158-01')
Wall Thickness
about 1/16 in (0.0625 in)
Standard
ASTM F2158; Hide-A-Hose 90 sweep drawing requires tubing marked 'ASTM F 2158 2 INCH PVC VACUUM TUBING'
Stick Lengths
47 in / 4 ft (MD sells 'ten 4 ft tubes', Canplas 829500411 is 4 ft 11 in), 8 ft (Canplas 8295008, MD/Hide-A-Hose bundles of ten 8 ft sticks = 80 ft), 10 ft (Canplas 82950010)
Typical Quantity
MD rough-in estimate: about 20 ft of pipe per inlet; one inlet with a 30 ft hose covers roughly 700-1,000 sq ft

How It Differs From Schedule40

  • Size: 2 in Schedule 40 plumbing pipe is nominal 2 in INSIDE diameter (OD about 2.375 in). Central vac pipe is 2 in OUTSIDE diameter. The two do not interchange without adapters (MD sells 'Vac Tube to Sch 40 2x2 Adaptor'; Home Depot/Central Vacuum Stores guide lists 'patented adaptor kits').
  • Wall: Schedule 40 is far thicker and heavier; vacuum pipe is about 1/16 in. Vacuum fittings are designed so the pipe wall matches the fitting hub, leaving no internal ledge for debris to catch (MD pipe-options page).
  • Interior finish: MD notes plumbing pipe interiors are rough and wall thickness varies, so debris can catch at joints; cuts with a chop/hack saw are often crooked.
  • Standards: MD states no known US central vacuum manufacturer recommends Schedule 40 and it does not meet IAPMO or ASTM F2158; many municipalities adopted F2158 and inspectors may reject non-conforming installs.
  • Hole sizes: drill 2-3/8 in holes for vacuum tubing vs 2-5/8 in for Schedule 40 (Home Depot guide); MD suggests a 2-9/16 in bit when wire must share the hole.
  • Counter-view: the Home Depot-hosted guide (Central Vacuum Stores) argues Sch 40 is cheaper, locally available, in 20 ft lengths and claims 25% more airflow; MD disputes recommending it. Present as a documented disagreement.

Common Variants

  • White PVC (industry standard)
  • Black ABS (Canplas 785xxx series fittings; pipe for retractable systems sometimes clear or black)
  • Metal/steel tubing or steel stub where pipe passes a fire block or runs near a flue (code dependent)
  • Clear PVC elbows (Canplas 765601CL) for retractable systems
  • Flexible 2 in ID vinyl/wire-reinforced hose for short VacPan connections only

Compatibility Checks

  • Confirm 2 in OD before buying fittings; if your existing pipe measures 2-3/8 in OD it is Schedule 40 and needs adapters.
  • Older systems may use 1-3/4 in or 1-13/16 in OD pipe (Kenmore etc.); MD sells 1.75 in and 1.8125 in to 2 in adapters.
  • Use only virgin-PVC pipe; MD warns regrind leaves rough interiors.

Common Mistakes

  • Buying Schedule 40 by mistake because the home-center label says '2 inch'.
  • Cutting with a hacksaw without deburring (burrs catch debris and snag retractable hose socks).
  • Applying cement inside the fitting (creates an internal glue bead that clogs).
  • Using primer-style plumbing technique; manufacturers say primer is not needed and regular PVC cement on the pipe end only.
  • Running through fire-rated walls without a steel stub or firestop collar (check local code).

When To Replace

Rarely; PVC lasts the life of the house. Replace sections that are cracked (construction damage, settling), have been crushed, or where a clog cannot be cleared and the pipe must be cut.

Fittings (sweep 90, short 90, 45, sweep tee, stop coupling, coupling, end cap, backing/mounting plate, flexible retrofit tubing)

What It Is

Injection-molded PVC (or ABS) socket fittings sized for 2 in OD vacuum tubing. Canplas calls the core set the 'Basic Seven' fittings. Pipe seats about 3/4 in into the socket against a stop shoulder.

What It Does

Change direction, branch, join and terminate the tubing while keeping a smooth interior. Fitting geometry matters because debris travels at high speed and tight turns are where clogs form.

Fitting Types

Sweep90
Long-radius 90 degree elbow; the 'most common fitting' (MD #502, Canplas 765510W PVC / 785510 ABS). Use everywhere in the run except at the inlet backing plate. Hide-A-Hose uses an even larger-radius special 90 (drawing shows roughly R9.5-10.5 in centerline).
Short90 tight90
Short/tight 90 degree elbow (MD #501, Canplas 765506W). Used ONLY at the inlet backing plate so an inlet fits inside a 2x4 wall; it is the tightest turn in the system, so it catches long stiff objects at the inlet where they can be retrieved. A 'special short 90' (Canplas 765503W, MD 2x3 version) exists for 2x3 stud walls. Ends are marked for different wall thicknesses (Home Depot guide).
Ell45
45 degree elbow (MD #504, Canplas 765517W). Use two 45s, not two 90s, for offset jogs. Spigot (street) versions (765518W, MD #505) plug directly into another fitting hub.
Sweep Tee
90 degree sweep tee, 3-way (MD #508, Canplas 'Tee' 765501W / sweep tee listed). Joins a branch to the trunk; the sweep MUST curve toward the power unit ('do not install backwards'). Never use a 'drop-out tee' where a branch sweep dumps straight down onto another inlet run. MD lists a straight tee as 'not recommended except when necessary'.
Wye45
45 degree wye for branches; a 'double wye' is prohibited by MD best practice because debris misses the turn and piles up.
Coupling stop Coupling
Coupling joins two pipe ends (MD #507, Canplas 765529W). A 'stop coupling' has a center stop so each pipe gets equal socket depth (NuTone CF388). A 'slip coupling' (Canplas 765528W) has no stop so it can slide over pipe for repairs.
End Cap pipe Cap
Slip pipe cap (Canplas 765547W PVC / 785547 ABS; MD 'White PVC Pipe Cap') terminates a dead-end stub or a future-inlet rough-in. Hide-A-Hose uses an 'RHF Stopper' (Canplas 765604W) / 'Hide-A-Hose Stop' at the end of the hose-storage run.
Backing Plate mounting Plate
The in-wall plate that the inlet faceplate screws to and that the short 90 glues into. Variants: standard plastic plate with 3/4 in spigot (Canplas 765568W 'VacuValve plastic mtg plate 3/4 spg'; MD '3-in-1' bracket fits most basic inlet covers), ES plates with built-in plaster guard (765569W/LW), metal plate with 3/4 in flanged spigot for new construction (Canplas 765565W; MD 'Metal Mounting Bracket with Spigot'), stud plates for 2x4 (791041W) and 2x3 (791044W) walls, and electric-valve plates with a junction box (Hayden SuperValve) or snap-in E-box (Canplas ElectraValve). MD says use 3/4 in spigot plates, not 1/2 in.
Flexible Retrofit Tubing
2 in ID flexible hose (vinyl, wire-reinforced). MD history: tried in the early 1960s and abandoned; today used only for the first few feet at a VacPan/sweep inlet where a rigid short 90 will not fit (Canplas sells 4 ft 845700-2 and 5 ft 845700-3 CanSweep flex hoses). Drawbacks per MD: high friction loss (lower airwatts), corrugations and thick bends catch debris, cannot be cut with a tubing cutter, not acceptable under IAPMO/ASTM F2158. Clamp to rigid pipe with a hose clamp. Products marketed as 'easy retrofit flexible pipe' trade airflow and clog risk for installation convenience.

Standard Specs

Socket Size
2 in ID hub for 2 in OD pipe
Insertion Depth
about 3/4 in to the stop
Material
PVC (white) or ABS (black); Canplas says Vaculine fittings are made to ASTM F2158 using virgin resin
Quality
MD: use fittings from polished stainless molds, about 25% heavier than cheap fittings

Compatibility Checks

  • Any ASTM F2158 fitting fits any 2 in OD vacuum pipe regardless of brand (Canplas, Plastiflex, Vaculine, NuTone CF-series, Hayden, MD).
  • Backing plates are brand-specific in screw spacing: MD says most brands share the same wall-plate pattern, but some Vacuflo (series 4940), Kenmore, VacuMaid and Filtex do not; screw holes on standard plates are about 3-7/8 in on center and the plate hole is about 1-5/8 in.
  • Retractable (Hide-A-Hose) runs need the maker's large-radius 90/45/22.5 fittings, not standard sweeps, in the hose-storage section.

Common Mistakes

  • Installing a sweep tee or wye backwards (sweep facing away from the power unit).
  • Using two 90s for an offset instead of two 45s.
  • Using a sweep 90 at the inlet (won't fit the wall) or a short 90 mid-run (clogs).
  • Gluing the fitting instead of the pipe end; not seating pipe fully against the shoulder (gap = ledge).
  • Using 1/2 in spigot backing plates (restrictive) instead of 3/4 in.
  • Gluing the short 90 to a VacPan (must stay removable).

When To Replace

Only when damaged or when a chronic clog point is identified (replace tight or wrong-direction fittings with sweeps). Backing plates are replaced when the inlet is upgraded to a non-matching pattern or when converting to electric/retractable valves.

Low-voltage control wire (18/2 or 20/2) and pipe straps with wire holders

What It Is

Two-conductor stranded wire that runs alongside the pipe from every inlet valve back to the power unit. Industry sizes: 20 AWG 2-conductor (MD rough-in kit #540, Hide-A-Hose DIY kit '80 ft of 20-gauge') or 18 AWG 2-conductor (Broan-NuTone 376UL 100 ft spool, 376500UL 500 ft). MD best practice: 'CL2 fire-rated 20-gauge or heavier'.

What It Does

Carries the ~24 V AC signal from the power unit's transformer to the two contacts in each inlet. Inserting a hose (or flipping a hose-handle switch) bridges the contacts and energizes the relay that switches 120 V (or 240 V) to the motor. It carries no motor current.

Standard Specs

Gauge
20/2 stranded typical; 18/2 also standard (NuTone)
Voltage
~24 V AC control (Home Depot guide: 'low-voltage (24 volt) wiring')
Quantity Per Inlet
about 30 ft per inlet (MD estimate)
Rating
CL2 recommended where run in walls

How It Runs

  • Follows the tubing so every inlet has an uninterrupted path to the unit; branch wires are spliced to the trunk wire with wire nuts/crimps at each tee.
  • Secure to the pipe with wire ties or tape about every 4-5 ft and at most elbows (MD: every 5 ft; cutting/cementing page: at least every 4 ft).
  • Leave about 6 in of wire at each backing plate, strip 1 in, wrap clockwise on the two screws on the back of the inlet faceplate.
  • Polarity: not electrically critical for the relay, but installers keep the same color on the same side at every inlet to avoid confusion (Home Depot guide; Hayden SuperValve note).
  • At the power unit, crimp the strands into the two spade terminals and push onto the unit's low-voltage tabs.
  • Can be daisy-chained from inlet to inlet or home-run; a short anywhere (coin in an inlet, pinched wire) makes the unit run continuously.

Pipe Straps With Wire Holder

Plastic saddle straps sized for 2 in OD pipe that screw/nail to joists or studs; some include a molded clip that captures the low-voltage wire beside the pipe so it does not need ties (Canplas 765545W 'PVC Pipe Strap with Built-In Wire Holder'; plain strap 762017; wire clip 765544W; MD #512 strap; J-hangers that nail to a joist). Used under floors, in basements, and where pipe is exposed in closets; MD rough-in estimate is about 3 straps per inlet. Install nail-on safety plates where pipe passes through plates so drywall screws cannot pierce it.

Compatibility Checks

  • Any 18-22 AWG 2-conductor works electrically; match what the unit's spade terminals and the inlet screws can accept.
  • Electric (110 V) inlets still need the low-voltage pair in addition to Romex.

Common Mistakes

  • Unsecured wire that sags and gets pinched or nailed.
  • Breaking the wire chain so far inlets do not start the unit.
  • Mixing low-voltage wire into the 110 V box of an electric inlet.
  • Forgetting to leave slack at the inlet for the faceplate connection.

When To Replace

When a break or short is found (unit runs continuously or an inlet will not start it). Test by disconnecting the two wires at the unit: if the unit stops running, the short is in the wire or an inlet.

Mounting brackets and 2x4 new-construction mounting plates

What It Is

The rough-in hardware that fixes the inlet position before drywall. A stud-mount plate has a nailing flange that is fastened to the side of a 2x4 (or 2x3) stud with the pipe spigot/short-90 already attached; a plaster guard (mud cover) screws over the opening to keep drywall mud and paint out. In existing homes the nailing flange is cut/snapped off and the bracket is set into a hole cut in the drywall.

What It Does

Holds the inlet opening at the right height and depth, provides the airtight joint between inlet faceplate and pipe, and gives the faceplate screws something to bite.

Standard Specs

Stud Sizes
2x4 (Canplas 791041W) and 2x3 (791044W) plates; 2x3 needs a 'special short 90'
Spigot
3/4 in spigot (recommended) or 1/4 in; plates with built-in plaster guard (Canplas ES 765569W/LW)
Metal Option
metal mounting bracket with flanged spigot plus gasket and screws for new construction (Canplas 765565W; MD)
Inlet Height
match electrical outlet height unless specified; Hide-A-Hose down-orientation aligns the valve bottom with outlets (~11 in), up-orientation at light-switch height
Hole Through Sole Plate
2-3/8 in hole, 2 in from the stud, centered in the plate (Home Depot guide)

Common Variants

  • Plastic 3-in-1 universal bracket (fits most basic faceplates)
  • Stud plate for 2x4 / 2x3
  • Metal plate with spigot
  • Electric plates: Hayden SuperValve plate with integral J-box for Romex (MD: electrician brings Romex from any nearby branch circuit); Canplas ElectraValve plate with snap-on E-box (12 or 14 AWG)
  • Retractable valve rough-in frames (Hide-A-Hose HS5000/HS6000 PRO rough-in kits; HS3000 frame required for HS4000 new construction)
  • Surface-mount boxes for garages/workshops where there is no stud wall

Compatibility Checks

  • Plate must match the faceplate brand family (screw spacing) and the wall thickness (extensions add 3/4 in per piece).
  • Electric plates: 12 AWG ElectraValve with 12 AWG circuits, 14 with 14.
  • Hide-A-Hose valves work in walls from 1/2 in to 1-1/2 in thick (HS5000); 6000 PRO door trims walls up to 1 in with 3/4 in stackable extensions.

Common Mistakes

  • Mounting the plate out of level or at the wrong height.
  • Forgetting the plaster guard, so mud and paint foul the plate.
  • Not protecting pipe with nail plates where it passes through top/sole plates.
  • Placing an inlet behind a door, in a pocket-door wall, or in an insulated exterior wall.

When To Replace

When converting a basic inlet to electric or retractable (new frame needed), or when the plate cracks. Faceplates (not plates) are what usually wear out.

Exhaust mufflers and louvered exhaust vents

What It Is

A muffler is an in-line sound-absorbing canister (socket x socket, sized for 2 in OD pipe, e.g., Canplas 765500W 'Square Muffler socket x socket'; MD muffler 'fits 2 in OD exhaust ports') that clamps or glues to the power unit's exhaust port. An exhaust vent (Canplas 793030W louvered, 765540W standard; MD 'Exhaust Vent Door') is the outside termination with a hinged or louvered door that opens under exhaust pressure.

What It Does

The muffler reduces the whine of the motor exhaust (Vaculine: 'mufflers will help to reduce the sound'). The vent lets exhaust air, fine dust and motor carbon dust leave the house while keeping weather and pests out.

Standard Specs

Pipe Fit
2 in OD vacuum tubing and fittings; use the same tubing as the system
Venting
True Cyclonic units (no filter) MUST be vented outside; filtered/bag units may be (Vacuflo FAQ; Home Depot guide).
Max Exhaust Run
Home Depot/Central Vacuum Stores guide: 'Venting over 10 feet is not recommended.'
Prohibited
Vacuflo manual: 'Do not vent into a wall, a ceiling, or concealed space.' MD: never let a unit exhaust dust into the room where it is installed.
Motor Exhaust Coupling
MD motor exhaust coupling: wide side 2 in ID / 2-1/4 in OD, narrow side 1-7/8 in ID / 2-1/8 in OD to adapt motor ports to pipe

Common Variants

  • Straight cylindrical muffler
  • Square muffler (Canplas)
  • Universal muffler with adapter rings (OVO ACCQP-01 style)
  • Louvered vent vs single flap/door vent
  • Round wall caps (NuTone 393 metal wall cap)

Compatibility Checks

  • Some power units have a 2 in OD PVC exhaust stub; others have a smaller motor port needing the exhaust coupling adapter.
  • Do not glue the muffler/pipe to the unit; clamp so the unit can be removed (Home Depot guide).
  • A muffler adds restriction; keep the run short and avoid long runs with many elbows.

Common Mistakes

  • Terminating exhaust in an attic, wall cavity or soffit.
  • Long exhaust runs (over about 10 ft) that load the motor.
  • Mounting the vent where exhaust blows onto a window, deck or gas-appliance intake.
  • Expecting a muffler to fix a loud, failing motor (bearing noise is not exhaust noise).

When To Replace

Mufflers: when the internal foam/fiber degrades (noise returns, debris in exhaust) or if it becomes a dust trap. Vents: when the flap sticks, cracks or the louvers break; a stuck-open flap lets cold air and insects in.
