Retractable hose parts

Retractable systems store the hose inside the wall pipe. They need special inlet valves and pipe routing, so most are dealer-installed; the wear parts are what owners buy.

Retractable hose systems (Hide-A-Hose; also Vacuflo Chameleon, Hayden Retraflex)

What It Is

A system in which the hose itself is stored inside the 2 in PVC tubing behind a special inlet valve. Hide-A-Hose Inc. (Monroe, WA; now allied with M.D. Manufacturing power units) makes the HS-series valves; Plastiflex manufactures the hoses. H-P Products' Chameleon and Hayden's Retraflex (Canada only) are competing designs.

How It Works

  • Open the valve door, pull out only the length of hose you need, engage the lock (HS5000: improved rubber locking sleeve; Chameleon: hose 'clicks' when fully out and is released by rotating it), attach a tool and vacuum. The unit starts from the low-voltage switch on the valve or an RF handle (two CR2032 batteries).
  • To retract: with the unit running and tools removed, unlock, cover the hose end partially with your hand to control speed, and suction draws the hose back into the pipe. Close the door only when unlocked (HS owner's manual).
  • Coverage: each inlet covers about 900-2,300 sq ft depending on hose length; a 50 ft hose typically covers 1,800-2,300 sq ft (HS5000 guide).

Hose Lengths

30, 40, 50 or 60 ft kits (Hide-A-Hose); installers custom-trim the valve end to fit each floor ('Do not trim the cuff-end'). RapidFlex (scratch-resistant, larger diameter, 20-30% more airflow claimed, no sock needed, blue 1-3/8 in mini-cuff) or SmartSoc (pre-installed washable sock, black 1-1/4 in mini-cuff). Replacement hoses sold as 32/42/52 ft lengths correspond to 30/40/50 ft installs with trim allowance (listing-level inference).

Inlet Valve Requirements

Generations
Original valve -> HS3000 -> HS4000 (uses HS3000 rough-in frame) -> HS5000 (2015; door 38% smaller, 4.4 x 6.3 in; mini-cuff; smoother lock) -> HS6000 / 6000 PRO (2025; conversion kits from HS4000 and original valves). Trim kits (valve + finish door + low-voltage switch + screws + wire nuts; HS4000 kit also a silicone pack) are sold separately from rough-in frames; part suffix W = white, A = almond, BLK = black (so 'HS4000A' = HS4000 trim kit, almond).
Wall Thickness
HS5000 adjusts for 1/2 in to 1-1/2 in walls (max 1.5 in); 6000 PRO door trims walls to 1 in with 3/4 in stackable extensions
Locking Sleeve
the rubber sleeve that grips the hose when locked; sold as a replacement kit (HS5000 kit: rubber sleeve, 4 screws and nuts, 8 nylon washers; HS4000 kit: top cap, rubber sleeve, 6 screws, fits HS3000 and HS4000). The whole hose must be pulled out before removing the valve.
Height
Down orientation (pipe runs to crawlspace/basement): align the valve bottom with electrical outlets (~11 in); mounting higher makes a harder retract angle. Up orientation (pipe runs to attic): light-switch height.
Mounting
stud-mounted rough-in frame with a sliding pipe fitting; surface or carbon-fiber mounting boxes for garages/shops; stand-alone cabinet/closet mounting kit (HS3000).

Pipe Routing Constraints

  • Pipe is standard 2 in OD ASTM F2158 tubing, but the hose-storage section may contain ONLY Hide-A-Hose special sweep 90s, 45s and 22.5s (large radius; the 90 drawing shows roughly a 9.5-10.5 in centerline radius) - no standard sweeps, tees or short elbows until past the storage length.
  • Do not join to another run until there is enough pipe to hold the hose plus margin: e.g., at least 44 ft of pipe for a 40 ft hose. Runs sometimes head away from the unit, loop, and come back.
  • Keep the stored hose on ONE plane (do not store it across two floors/planes); avoid back-to-back 90s; space 90s out; try not to exceed four 90s per valve (more 90s = more pull force).
  • Glue the pipe, never the fitting; deburr every cut; any glue glob or burr snags and damages the hose sock.
  • With RapidFlex hose install a reducer/stopper before the first standard fitting so a stretched hose cannot jam in a tight fitting.
  • Down-orientation with 1/2 in drywall: drill a 2-9/16 in hole so the pipe can flex; shim if needed or the valve can break.
  • Test for sealed vacuum before drywall: valve reading should be within 3-5 in of the unit's sealed reading; plug untested valves with a ball.
  • Run low-voltage wire to each valve exactly as for a standard install.

Power Unit Requirements

Airflow falls with longer hoses, so a larger power unit is required to compensate; 'up two floors needs a strong power unit'. Hide-A-Hose rates MD units by valves supported (CV300/A650tv/F650t up to 3 valves; M715h up to 5). Any brand of unit can be used, but dealers specify high-airflow models.

Retrofit

Yes. Hide-A-Hose: 'Most existing central vacuum systems can be retrofitted' given attic or crawlspace access; a retrofit typically takes one day with no drywall repair. The rough-in frame has pointed tabs/cut-down forks for existing walls; existing standard inlets can be converted (original-valve conversion frames; HS6000 conversion kits). Existing pipe runs usually cannot be reused for storage because they contain standard fittings and tees, so new storage runs are added in the attic/crawlspace. Vacuflo says a standard inlet 'may be able to take a Chameleon' depending on access.

Compatibility Checks

  • Tools: SmartSoc cuff is 1-1/4 in (standard tools fit), RapidFlex cuff is 1-3/8 in (adapters or Hide-A-Hose comfort-seal telescoping wand, about 25-38 in, stainless, button lock).
  • Replacement hose must match the valve generation and cuff type; sock kits are SmartSoc-only.
  • Use only Hide-A-Hose-supplied parts in the storage run or the warranty is void (HS5000 guide).

Common Mistakes

  • Using standard sweep 90s or a tee in the storage section.
  • Not reserving enough pipe length for the hose.
  • Storing the hose across two planes or with back-to-back 90s (hard to pull, slow to retract).
  • Locking the door closed (it will not seal) or retracting with a tool still attached.
  • Undersized power unit for 50-60 ft hoses.

When To Replace

Hose: when the sock is torn, the hose is kinked/cracked or the cuff O-ring leaks (O-ring 10-packs sold). Locking sleeve: when the hose slips while locked or will not release. Door: when the seal leaks (replacement HS5000 doors available). Valve: upgrade to HS6000 for the newer lock/door.
